Its special location on a ridge between Valdichiana and Val d'Orcia has marked the history of the city of Montepulciano, characterizing its urban design.
The town rises on a hilltop 605 meters above the sea level, from which the view extends over the municipality's valleys and territories; the view is made even lovelier by olive groves and vineyards, and by the zone's many natural features, such as the chalky clay hills and the cypresses that vertically mold the landscape. From the Renaissance City Hall's Tower one can see as far as the Sibillini and Cimone mountains, and in exceptionally clear weather, the Gran Sasso d'Italia to the south.

From Montepulciano it's easy to reach Val d'Orcia (Pienza, San Quirico, Bagno Vignoni), Amiata, Umbria (Perugia, Assisi, Lake Trasimeno) and Rome.
